Could you summarize your goals for the Super Y-League?
Marcos: Allow players to be more easily identified and ensure that deserving, talented players will not fall through the cracks as easily as they have in the past.
If there is a budding Pele somewhere out there, he will be found. More importantly, players will improve at a more rapid pace because they will be playing more often against better competition in a more pressurized environment.
While we respect the rights of each state association to conduct business as it sees fit because of its charter, it has been proven over a number of years that localized structure may not be the best environment for developing elite players. While ODP served its purpose for a time because it was all we had (and still may be useful in various states and situations), we need to move beyond ODP to a more direct way of finding a greater number of elite player candidates. The recent approval of the SYL ODP system will enable more opportunities and a better environment for players to be identified for U.S. National Team Programs.
We hope that state associations who are bold and brave enough will want to join the Super Y-League and we will be happy to accommodate them. However, we also understand that if their rules must restrict players, we must reluctantly accept that. However, United Soccer Leagues believes that, ultimately, players and their parents / guardians will make the right decision about what is best for a young player's soccer future. That will in no way affect the goals of USL in establishing the Super Y-League as a main element in the overall USL national development structure.
Weibe: We would like to create the definitive league for the elite level player and club. I think that this is about as short as I can describe our goals. We want to be able to provide everything necessary to the elite level player, club and coach. It is important that we collectively continue developing this league to make this a priority for the players and teams.
Just as other leagues have league play and cup play, we hope that U.S. Soccer will do its part and create a youth open cup for these teams and players that compete in the SYL, AYSO, USYS, US Club Soccer and any other youth organization. There is not a true national champion in this country at the Federation level. We would like to see US Youth Soccer open the doors to the Snickers Championship to all members of the Federation. If they don't then I think it is the responsibility of U.S. Soccer to provide a youth open championship just as they do with the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for the senior men's level.
