Championship Tuesday Set for 2005 SYL Finals Semifinals completed after waiting out thunderstorms
Monday, November 21
TAMPA, FL -- On a stormy Monday in Tampa, Florida, the intensity at the 2005 Super Y-League North American Finals went up a notch as the field had been narrowed down from its initial 128 teams in 10 brackets to 40 semifinalists.
Four finals were set from the early semifinals before a thunderstorm rolled through both the Ed Radice Sports Complex and University of South Florida facilities forcing postponements of the semifinals and consolation games, but the action would resume to complete the field for the 10 games on Championship Tuesday.
Two championship matches feature showdowns between unbeaten teams from the season and SYL Finals play while two others feature rematches of games from group play this week.
The U14 Boys Championship will see De Anza SC (12-0-2 overall) taking on the Chicago Magic (10-0-0 season), who swept their group play with three wins and downed the MetroStars 2-0 in the semifinals. De Anza SC knocked out the Michigan Wolves by the same 2-0 scoreline in their semifinal.
The U17 Girls bracket features both oddities in the championship with Match Fit Academy (12-0-0 season) taking on Charlotte SC (7-0-0 season) in the final after playing each other to a 1-1 tie on the first day of group play. Charlotte went on to win the group at 2-0-1 and down the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0. Match Fit Academy, meanwhile, finished 1-0-2 to earn a wild card berth to the semis, where they advanced via penalty kicks 3-2 after a scoreless draw.
The other group play rematch is in the U13 Girls bracket where the Cleveland Internationals will be looking to avenge a 3-1 loss on the second day of the tournament when they face Cavitt Academy in the final. Cavitt went on to win the group with a 3-0-0 mark while Cleveland finished 2-1-0.
Two other teams have a shot at finishing unbeaten.
The U15 Boys Reading Rage (11-0-1 season, 1-0-2 group play), who downed host HC United 3-0 in the semifinals will face Schulz Academy, who topped the New Hampshire Phantoms 5-2 in the semis.
The U17 Boys Chicago Magic (10-0-0 season, 3-0-0 group play) edged Santa Clara Sporting Ruckus 1-0 in the semifinals and will take on Storm Academy, who advanced with a 3-1 win over Cleveland Soccer Academy.
