Super Y-League ODP Select Teams Announced U15, U16, U17 Boys ODP National Camp concludes impressive event
(January 17, 2006, TAMPA, FL) On Sunday, the USL Super Y-League concluded a highly successful 2006 Olympic Development Program National Camp for U15, U16 and U17 Boys in Cocoa, FL. The top players from the Super Y-League 2005 season in each of the divisions coast-to-coast participated in four days of extensive training, matches, and player-education seminars.
The event was specifically designed to identify players for US National Team Programs. US Soccer National Team and Staff Coaches, in conjunction with the league’s ODP technical staff, evaluated players for the various US Soccer Youth National Teams. In addition to these player identification opportunities, many coaches from top collegiate programs around the United States scouted for their next recruiting class.
“The Super Y-League ODP Camps helps develop the future of US Soccer. There are many steps in order to be a member of the national team and this is one of the first. It also allows the players the chances to be recognized by other clubs and possible college coaches. Therefore the opportunities that lie here are endless for these players,” said US Soccer U17 National Team Assistant Coach Raul Diaz Arce.
Brown University Men’s Soccer Assistant Scott Wierchinski added, “Definitely a lot of talent out here this weekend. Most of these guys are in the thick of the recruiting stages and we’re just hoping to find a few sleepers that no one knows about.”
The event also contained leading speakers on topics involving sports psychology and fitness training. Dr. Greg Dale, a well-known sports psychologist and the Mental Training Coach for Duke University athletics, spoke with the players on motivation and mental strength. Also speaking to the players was Dan Barlow, a specialist in plyometric and strength training from Silver Spring, MD.
At the completion of the event, the top players were recognized and selected to the USL Super Y-League ODP Select Team. These teams consist of the top players selected by the ODP Technical Staff and US Soccer National Staff based on their performance at the ODP National Camp. These players will be recommended to US Soccer Youth National Team Staff, and may be involved in future domestic and international events.
“It's just one the of best soccer experiences I have ever had,” said U17 Great Lakes ODP Divisional Team member Chris Skovira. “It is pretty amazing how high the level of competition is.” “We [USL] were pleased that the players, ODP coaching staff, US Soccer, and coaches that attended thought that this was first-class, well operated event,” added Super Y-League Director, Matt Weibe.
“The success of this camp has set a new standard for the ODP system, and player identification via the clubs in Super Y-League competition will continue to provide more and more opportunities for players and our US Soccer National Team Programs.”
Three more National ODP Camps remain. The U13 and U14 Boys will begin on January 26, and the Girls National ODP Camps will be held the first two weekends in February.
