Super Y-League 15, 16, 17 Girl’s ODP Select Teams Announced
(February 6, 2006, TAMPA, FL) On Sunday, the USL Super Y-League concluded a highly successful 2006 Olympic Development Program National Camp for U15, U16, and U17 girl’s age groups in Cocoa, FL. The top players from the Super Y-League 2005 season in each of the divisions coast-to-coast participated in four days of extensive training, matches, and player-education seminars.

The event was specifically designed to identify players for US National Team Programs. US Soccer National Team and Staff Coaches, in conjunction with the league’s ODP technical staff, evaluated players for the various US Soccer Youth National Teams. In addition to these player identification opportunities, many coaches from top collegiate programs around the United States scouted for their next recruiting class.

The event also contained leading speakers on topics involving sports psychology and fitness training. Dr. Greg Dale, a well-known sports psychologist and the Mental Training Coach for Duke University athletics, spoke with the players on motivation and mental strength.  Also speaking to the players was Dan Barlow, a specialist in plyometric and strength training from Silver Spring, MD.

During the event, weather altered the schedule for the players.  While waiting for the weather to better before taking the field, the players had the opportunity to listen to former U.S. Women’s National Team player and ODP Staff Coach, Laurie Schwoy, discuss the dedication and commitment needed to reach the national team ranks. Players also had the opportunity to listen to current U17 Women’s National Team Coach, Erica Walsh, on the U17 Women’s National Team Program.

“The best advice I would give to kids today is if it’s important to you and you want to reach the highest level possible, make soccer your priority.  Train harder than your friends, invest your time training on your own.  Make a personal commitment to be the absolute best you can be.  Be an overachiever- squeeze every drop out of your given talents.”

At the completion of the event, the top players were recognized and selected to the USL Super Y-League ODP Select Team.  These teams consist of the top players selected by the ODP Technical Staff and US Soccer National Staff based on their performance at the ODP National Camp. These players will be recommended to US Soccer Youth National Team Staff, and may be involved in future domestic and international events.

One more National ODP Camp remains.  The last set of Girl’s National ODP Camps begins this Thursday for the U13 and U14 age groups.
