The summer heat of June returned to the Super Y-League this week as the Mid Atlantic and Pacific North California divisions dominated the week eight calendar. Over 160 Super Y-League games were played this past weekend. The Pacific North California division hosted 60 while the Mid Atlantic recorded 30.
Mid Atlantic
The U17 Boys’ allotment in the Mid Atlantic Division has the market cornered when it comes to goal scoring ability. Three highlighted games in week eight totaled 20 goals.
The first, a mid week meeting between the home standing U17 Long Island Rough Riders boys’ and Ironbound Soccer Club satisfied many goal hungry spectators. The final count went in favor of the Rough Riders by a count of 5-2. Michael Porcelli accounted for a hatrick’s worth of Long Island’s goals while teammate Conor O’Brien also recorded two.
Last season’s U17 North American Champions, then the U16 Metrostars, took a 4-2 decision from City Islanders Academy on the strength of three second half goals.

Jonny Exantus, perhaps the Super Y-League’s most visible character due to off-season rumors about a future signing with the club’s senior team, scored two goals on the day. The Red Bulls deep bench also proved their worth with goals coming from Martin John and Hamilton Sotelo. Andrew Santeusanio and Michael Vanaskie each put up a goal in the loss for the City Islanders.
The South Jersey Barons conclude the Mid Atlantic highlight dropping a third goal-happy 4-2 decision that went the way of visiting Parsippany S.C. Josef Tomitsch had the only multi-goal game between the two sides, breaking away from his usual midfielder role with the U17’s.

”Josef is more of a technical player then he is a goal scorer,” said U17 head coach Doug Nevins. “It was a surprise to us how well he was able to fill the shoes up front as if he were a natural striker. But it was great for us - to get three points on the road from a strong South Jersey Team.”
Tomitsch had a breakout, four goal weekend, scoring two goals in a 3-0 win over the Reading Rage the day before.
”Both of his goals on Sunday were out of the air,” added Coach Nevins. “The first was on a long throw we put behind the South Jersey defense. Josef beat the keeper to it and put it past him. The second was a pretty goal off a corner kick. We ran a short corner and got off a nice cross to the back post. John Silva put it back across to Tomitsch where he was able to put it away.”
Pacific – North California
Capital Athletic Soccer Academy’s Katelynn Furtado drug her team to a 4-2 victory over Juventus Sport Club in U13 girl’s action Sunday at Marlin Park in Redwood City, California. Furtado gave Capital Athletic an early 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute when she beat two defenders and bent a shot past Juventus goalkeeper Liliana Garza.
Furtado struck again ten minutes later on a free kick from nearly 30 yards out. The direct kick put Capital Athletic up 2-0 going into halftime.
Juventus, impassioned from the halftime speech, tied the game in the first ten minutes of the second half. Cynthya Garcia calmly knocked in a PK goal just minutes before Elizabeth Browne finished a well placed cross. Forced to regroup, Capital Athletic looked again to the heroics of Furtado but halftime adjustments by Juventus kept her hat trick in the bag.
Capital Athletics’ Chrystal Martinez broke the 2-2 tie in the 55th minute to give her side a 3-2 lead. Furtado refused to be denied the three-goal game and finished a monumental day scoring in the final five minutes of regulation.

“The Juventus match was very good,” said Capital Athletics’ U13 Coach Melissa Cavitt. “Katelynn is a very skilled player. She brings a lot of creativity and excitement to the game.”
“Katie is an outstanding midfielder,” added Capital Athletics’ Girls’ Director of Coaching Gabe Bolton. “She is able to breakdown defenses with very creative dribbling and also has good vision of the field. She is the type of player that makes others around her better.”
