Switzerland: Tourney Update Team Impressive at International Swiss U16 Cup
Saturday, August 5, 2006
The Super Y-League Select Team did well in group play of the International Swiss U16 Cup, finishing as one of four teams with one loss or less in five matches and qualifying for the fifth-sixth place match.
The final day of action ultimately decided the placement of the team as they played second-place Borrusia Dortmund to a scoreless draw, an impressive feat considering the German side leads the tournament in scoring with 15 goals.
The draw was followed by a late, narrow 1-0 loss to Manchester City. The English side won the group with an unbeaten 4-0-1 record.
The Select Team finished third in the group and tied for the best defense through group play in the tournament with only one goal allowed, finishing level with Group A winner RSC Anderlecht, who finished 5-0-0. An absolutely astonishing feat for a team comprised of players who had never played together before traveling to Europe.

Comments from players during the tournament:
This experience in Switzerland was nothing what I thought it would be. High class teams and fields, it’s like a dream come true. My favorite experience so far has been meeting and interacting with the Peace Team. When you really get to know them, they are exactly like each and every one of us. This trip is a trip that I will remember the rest of my life. -Brett Finkelstein
This trip has been amazing. I never thought that I was going to come to Switzerland and go through this great experience. It has been cool getting to know the cities and all the guys and especially the coaches. I was kind of dizzy and sick at first, but now I feel great. -Jonathan Mercado
This trip is one of a kind. I like the atmosphere and the people. The game of play is awesome and so fast moving that it makes me want to work harder to become a better player. -Junior Chapman
Switzerland is amazing! There aren’t any big skyscrapers like Chicago. Everything is older and there are still castles around. The towns are beautiful and seem like old farm towns. The teams in the tournament play so quickly that you can tell they are in the game for a long term and not just here to play a tournament. This is an experience that I would never forget and I am glad to have this opportunity. -Conner Miller
Switzerland rocks my socks!! It’s very quiet and old fashion but it’s been a great trip meeting new kids and new coaches even though my ear was hurting in the beginning. It has been an experience that I will never forget. -Shaun Greenfield
