'88/'89 & '90 Boys SYL Select Teams Announced
Tuesday, January 23
TAMPA – The United Soccer Leagues Super Y-League Olympic Development Program (ODP) announced today the final selections for the ‘88/’89 and ‘90 Super Y-League Select teams for the 2006 season. Selections were based off the results of the recent Super Y-League ODP National Camp held Thursday, January 18 through Sunday, January 21 at the Cocoa Expo Center in Cocoa, Florida.
The players selected to the Super Y-League Select Team will be recommended by the ODP scouting system to the U.S. National Team Coaching Staff. USL will also be exploring opportunities to provide these players with domestic or international exposure to enhance player development.
“We received a very positive reaction to the 2007 version of the Super Y-League ODP National Camp,” said Super Y-League ODP Director Vicente Bastidas. “The coaching staff created a relaxed atmosphere conducive to top player performances throughout the camp. Scouts from colleges and universities throughout the country showed considerable interest in our players. We also uncovered one or two top prospects to be passed along to the U.S. National Team staff for further evaluation.”
Members of the selection committee included coaches from prestigious colleges and universities from around the country: Mike Parsons of Penn State University, Todd Yeagley of Indiana University, Chad Reily of Norte Dame and Ernie Yarborough of the University of Michigan, among others. Spearheading the selection committee was Super Y-League ODP National Camp Technical Director Roby Stahl and Super Y-League ODP National Staff Coach John Hannan. Coaching staffs from the most prestigious clubs in the Super Y-League finalized the list of 24 full time coaches.
“The coaches came away excited about the Super Y-League ODP system and National Camp,” said Stahl. “They felt seeing a player in a natural environment, over a long period of time, is the way they need to be scouting players. Our goal here is to aid U.S. Soccer in identifying players. The coaches liked that they could sit in one place and see 150 elite players from one age group.”
“The caliber of players at the event was much higher this year,” added Stahl, who has been with the Super Y-League ODP National Camps for four years. “More players are seeing the value in attending these events, and USL is providing the necessary structure through their system to afford players opportunities to compete at the highest levels.”
“This was a great event,” said D.C. United midfielder Michael Foss. “I have participated in several regional and state ODP camps, but this was my first experience with the National ODP Camp for the Super Y-League. So many times, coaches pressure the team they have during the week and as a result we do not play to our potential. The way the coaching staff handled things put me at ease and enabled me to play my style of soccer.”
About the ODP National Camps Over the course of the season, the top U.S. players in the USL Super Y-League were selected by the ODP Scouting System to attend the ODP National Camp. During an intense three-day combine at the ODP National Camp, players will be evaluated by ODP Staff Coaches and U.S. Soccer National Coaching Staff for U.S. National Team Programs. During this time, players will learn the demands to compete at the highest levels of the game. Many collegiate coaches will also be scouting players for college soccer programs.
