STOCKTON, CA – The Cougars Soccer Club, serving the San Joaquin Valley in California, continues to emphasize player soccer development and college soccer commitment through their Super Y-League girls’ soccer program. The Cougars emphasize fundamental technical/skills and individual 1 v. 1 attacking and defending in Super Y-League play.
The club specializes in college commitments based on the efforts of Mark and Matt Kusanovich and Rodney Dumlao. The team spends hours volunteering their time beyond the soccer field to ensure that each Cal Cougar player receives a college soccer scholarship commitment.
“The Cougars and their coaches use Super Y-League play to network with college coaches on a one on one basis,” said Cal Cougars Director of Coaching Mark Kusanovich. “The Super Y-League is important for our recruitment purposes. There is seldom a game where the players or coach has not lined up a scout to watch a individual player compete. Early college commitments are already being made by the female players.”
Last season’s Cal Cougars Super Y-League girls’ received 18 scholarships to play at several prominent colleges including: USF, Pacific, San Francisco State, Salem, Cal. State Stanislaus, and Cal State Bakersfield. Two years ago, another 18 players from the Cal Cougars Super Y-League system received college soccer scholarships from: Stanford, UCLA, USF, Cal. Davis, St. Mary’s College, Louisiana Tech, Lees-McRae, Arkansas State, Cascade, Notre Dame de Namur, Stanislaus State, and Utah Valley State. In 2005, the opening year of the program, Cal Cougar players committed to nine colleges in the Western Region.
In 2006, the Cal Cougars U17 girls qualified for the Super Y-League North American Finals. During the league finals the side compiled a 1-2 record during group play, including a 1-0 victory over Group A champion, the Indiana Invaders. The side with the best chance of earning an invitation to the league finals this season is the Cal Cougars U14 girls. The team currently holds a record of 3-4-1, 11 points back of division leading San Juan SC (7-4-1). In head to head competition the Cougars defeated San Juan 3-2 on Saturday, June 2. In the rematch the Cougars forced a 1-1 draw on the road, Wednesday, July 18.
If the Cougars can pull out three straight wins, two against the Santa Cruz County Breakers and one against the Cal Odyssey, Group A of the U14 Northern Californian Division will come down to one match between the Cougars and Juventus Sport Club.
