Monday, November 19

TAMPA – United Soccer Leagues 2007 SoccerFest initiative, the Five-A-Side futsal tournament that ran in conjunction with the Super Y-League North American Finals at Ed Radice Sports Park in Northwest Tampa these past two days, wrapped up Sunday evening. The event brought together more than 50 teams from the local Tampa soccer community to mingle with the influx of USL’s 140 Super Y-League teams and more than 100 senior franchises attending the organization’s Annual General Meeting.

“I would like to thank Fox Soccer Channel, Bright House Networks, United Soccer Association, UMBRO, the Tampa Tribune and Tampa Bay’s Mix 100.7 for helping to make this event a reality,” said Five-A-Side Frenzy Coordinator Brandon Morris. “Everyone involved was pleased with the level of competition and the center-stage mentality of the Sprinturf Futsal field. It added an exciting presence to SoccerFest and most matches were attended by hundreds of spectators.”

The highest paced division of the Five-A-Side Frenzy was the Adult Men’s Division captured by La Gambeta from Guinta, Ecuador. The side defeated Strictly Soccer, 3-2 in the final on a game-ending golden goal.

“The coach of the team went by the name of Andres,” said Morris. “He runs a few indoor soccer facilities in Ecuador and just happened to be vacationing in Tampa the same weekend as the Five-A-Side Frenzy. They wanted to see if they could play some soccer while they were in the U.S. and everything worked out well for both parties.

“They were very excited about the level of competition at the event,” added Morris. “The final came down to a golden goal, sudden-death overtime decision. How could they not be?”

Other Five-A-Side Frenzy Champions included the Brandon FC Flames, who captured the U10 boys title, TEAM, who championed the 11/12 boys Division, Bragons II, who took the 13/14 boys crown and Joe Public, winners of the 15/16 boys competition.

On the women’s side of the Five-A-Side Frenzy the Flagler Women hoisted the Adult women’s title, Braden River SC Anna and counterparts Braden River SC David won opposite side of the 13/14 girls competition and Pinellas Park United laid claim to the 15/16/17 girls division championship.

“We were very pleased with the high level of interest we received regarding the event this season,” said Morris. “From last year to this season, the Five-A-Side Frenzy has more the tripled in size. The feedback we received regarding event this season will help us to make it even bigger next year.”
