U17 All-League Teams Announced
32 players earn top honors at the U17 boys and girls North American Finals

Monday, December 03

TAMPA – United Soccer Leagues announced today the All-League teams for girls and boys who took part in the ninth annual Super Y-League North American Finals held last month. Selections were based off the nominations of opposing coaches made throughout tournament play. Selections per position were altered to include the players receiving the most nominations. All players selected to the list are automatically eligible to attend the Super Y-League ODP National Camps beginning Thursday, January 10 in Cocoa, Florida.

The Chicago Magic’s defensive pairing of Jake Federlick and Stephen Lucianek represents the U17 North American Champion on the U17 All-League team. Both defensive stalwarts on the Midwestern powerhouse took home a share of the U17 MVP Trophy as Head Coach Todd Bailey felt each deserved the honor.

Chicago’s counterparts in the final and fellow Midwestern club, the Toronto Lynx also had two players named to the All-League team: forward Mackenzie Wilde and defender Julian Ramjohn.

“The Super Y-League North American Finals was a class competition as far as we were concerned,” said Toronto Head Coach Duncan Wilde. “The refereeing was great and the competition was well organized.”

In the final, Wilde’s side faced the Chicago Magic for the second time this season. Their first meeting ended in a 2-2 draw on Saturday, July 7. This match ended as a 3-1 overtime decision for the Magic, who scored both goals after surviving a near-fatal strike from All-League forward Mackenzie Wilde.

“We thought we had Chicago’s number,” said Wilde of the match. “Their keeper won the game for them with a save that was just amazing.”

On the play Toronto forward Sherif El-Marsi beat two defenders and got off a precise cross to a wide-open Wilde on the back post. Sliding from post-to-post, Chicago goalkeeper Evan Johnson kept the ball in his sights and made a jaw-dropping reaction save with his right palm to keep the match at 1-1.

“I asked the boys after the match if Mackenzie might have miss-hit the volley but they said no,” said Wilde. "The boys said he killed it and the goalkeeper just flung his arms up and made the save.

“Their coach said after the match that they had seen us already and had a game plan going in to play more long-ball and keep us turned the wrong way,” added Wilde. “He was right in saying that sometimes you have to win ugly. They did what they needed to but it does show how strong a division we have in the Midwest.”

The loss in the U17 finals marked the second time this season the Lynx advanced to the final four of a USL competition. Their Super-20 Men’s team dropped a shootout decision to PDA in the final this summer. Toronto’s parent club playing in the Premier Development League finished the regular season with a record of 6-6-4.

“It was a great season for our youth system,” said Wilde. “Our boys finished eighth in the Super Y-League First 11 Rankings and we finished ninth overall as a club. This U17 team will basically become our Super-20 side now but they will be very young, nine of the players on this U17 team are still eligible to play another season.”
