SYL ODP National Camps Begin For Girls The top '89-'91 girls in the SYL compete through Sunday
Thursday, January 24
COCOA, FLORIDA – United Soccer Leagues Super Y-League ODP National Camps for their ‘89/’90 and ’91 girls began tonight at the Cocoa Expo Center in eastern Florida. As the 150+ girls trickled into the four-day camp, clouds continued to develop over the area. Light storms began around 6PM, resulting in an overhaul of the first-night schedule.
The new schedule included two, one-hour indoor sessions after the high school sophomores, juniors and seniors met the SYL ODP Coaching Staff for the first time during Opening Ceremonies at 7 PM.
Opening ceremonies were directed by Super Y-League ODP Coordinator Sean Trask and Technical Director John Hannan. Following opening ceremonies players met with their coaches for the first time. Friday morning will begin with the only training session of the weekend. The first set of matches start tomorrow evening at 3PM.
“The nice thing about the Super Y-League is the fact that soccer people are making all the important decisions,” said Hannan. “As simple as that sounds, it is very refreshing these days. When changes need to be made in camps like these, they happen.”
Hannan, along with the help of the experienced Super Y-League ODP National Camp Coaches will produce a list of the top players at the end of this weekend’s camp. The list will be posted on Sunday, January 27. Staff coaches will select players for the all-star game based on their performance throughout the camp. Elite players on the Super Y-League Select Team will be recommended to the U.S National Team Staff to be included in National Team Programs.
The coaching staff for the ‘89/’90 and ’91 girls SYL ODP National Camps includes coaches from the top professionalized youth systems playing under the SYL banner. Several coaches on the staff also contribute to various collegiate programs. The list includes: Hannan of the Washington Crossfire, Assistant Technical Director Al Pastore of Wilmington Academy (North Carolina), Scott Wheeler and Nick Flohre of Ohio Elite Soccer Academy, Matt Sprague of Seacoast United (New Hampshire), Marcel Choquette of St. Michael’s College (Vermont), Tom Giovatto of the Brooklyn Knights (New York), Seth Coulter of Black Watch (Rhode Island), Jay Golomb of the Baltimore Bays and Darren Gallagher, the Head Coach of the USL W-League club Boston Renegades.
