LAKE COUNTRY, BC - The Thompson Okanagan Bank of Montreal FC U16 boys defeated the Coastal Whitecaps 2-1 Sunday in Super Y-League play at Beasley Park in Winfield.
Coastal opened the scoring seven minutes into the second half on a sharp-angled shot that eluded keeper Branden Ritchey of Kelowna.
Thompson Okanagan responded quickly when Enzo Paal of Vernon slipped a pass through the Coastal defense to Joel Malouf, also of Vernon, who calmly put the ball into the right corner of the net to equalize.
Malouf continued the dominating play by stripping a Coastal midfielder of the ball and then providing Spencer Duncan of Salmon Arm a perfect lead pass on the wing.
Duncan hit a left-footed cross into the goal area where Paal leaped high over a defender to put a spectacular header into the net with three minutes remaining.
The win moves the Bankers into third place with games coming up this weekend in Yakima and Seattle.
Coach David Broadhurst was extremely happy with the win.
“Paal, Malouf and Duncan were powerful up front and proved to be too much to handle, while our defense allowed very few scoring opportunities,” he said.
Broadhurst was happy with all of his players but made special mention of his defensive back line of Jordan Brucks of Kelowna, Sean Hellingman of Kamloops and Keefery Joyce and Connor Lee, both of Vernon.
