NEW ENGLAND – Not since the 2004 North American Finals has the New England contingent of MPS Boston and MPS Cape Cod forwarded as many teams to the Super Y-League’s postseason as they have in 2008. That year the clubs combined to send eight teams to Florida. A significant dry spell followed, in which MPS produced just eight postseason MPS teams in three seasons. But now, with seven teams heading to the 10th Annual Super Y-League North American Finals, Mass Premier Soccer has returned.

Here’s a closer look at each team…

U16 Boys MPS Boston
Coached by Justin Capell, the MPS Boston U16 boys have made significant developmental strides since they came together as a group at the U13 level. Each season they have made huge progress, culminating in the 2008 season where, as well as qualifying for the Super Y-League North American Finals, they won the Needham Showcase, the U.S. Club Regional Championship and narrowly lost out on penalty kicks in the U.S. Club National Final.

During the Super Y-League regular season the side lost only one match, an unusual 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Ottawa Fury. Aside from that match the Bulldogs gave up only seven goals all season. They finished second in the New England Division behind Black Watch SC, who they tied twice this season. The first match finished 0-0. The second was 1-1. MPS Boston U16 boys’ final record was 8-1-3.

U15 Girls MPS Boston
Coached by James Hamblin, the U15 Boston girls have gone from strength to strength in their 2008 season. Finishing third with 22 points in the Super Y-League in 2007, a record 7-4-1, the Renegades have excelled to a first place finish in 2008 with 31pts. Their record this season improved to 10-1-1, taking them to the North American Finals.

The U15 Renegades nearly became the Needham Memorial Day tournament Champions for the second year in a row after narrowly being beaten in the final on penalties. Once the Super Y-League season began, the Renegades got off to a great start by tying, then beating the 2007 New England Division Champions, Seacoast United, in league play. To cement their position at the top of the league, they managed to beat close rivals Ottawa mid-season. However, it was not until the last day of the season that the region was won with a good performance against our sister team, the Lady Crusaders. The Renegades are excited to be in their first North American Finals competition.

U13B MPS Boston
Coached by Andrew Moir, the MPS Boston U13 boys enjoyed an excellent first year together matching the success of last year’s MPS U13’s by taking the New England Division title. The Bulldogs enjoyed an outstanding start to the season, playing their best soccer in the early part of the year. That led to a perfect record through the team’s first five games. The season took a twist midway through with an unusual amount of injuries. A total of eight players were sidelined for a lengthy period. This was a true test for the roster and the whole squad rallied together to show well against some very competitive teams who were pushing each other to take the number one spot. MPS Boston is very proud of the effort put forth by the U13 boys. Every player on the roster worked toward a true team effort and finished on the top of a very competitive league.

U17B MPS Cape Cod
Coached by Andrew Prosser, the U17 Cape Cod boys had a lot of new faces come into the team for the 2008 season. After a difficult start due to injuries the boys gelled and gained respect and belief for one another. As the season went on and confidence grew in each player, the side got stronger and stronger.  A dedicated positive set of boys who have had their highs and lows throughout the season, the Crusaders have come out stronger then they began.

The side finished the regular season in third place behind the Ottawa Fury and New Hampshire Phantoms. MPS Cape Cod’s final mark was 7-6-1, and amazingly, they were one of only two clubs in the eight-team New England Division to finish the season with a positive goal differential. They netted 29 goals while allowing only 19 through 14 matches.

U17G MPS Cape Cod
Coached by Darren Gallagher, the U17 MPS Cape Cod girls return to the Super Y-League North American Finals after clinching the New England Division for the second straight year. After a narrow loss in last year’s North American Semifinal, the Lady Crusaders are determined to take that final step and earn a North American Championship in 2008. The entire squad is excited and motivated about the challenges that lie ahead in Tampa.

The club’s final mark in 2008 stood at 14-2-0. That total includes their 2-2-0 postseason. This time around the girls posted a 9-2-1 mark during the regular season. The Lady Crusaders scored 45 times in 2008 and allowed only 21 goals against.

U16 Girls MPS Boston
Coached by Sarah Dooley and Mark McDevitt, the MPS U16 girls had an excellent Super Y-League season. The team finished with a very impressive record: 10-1-1. This will be the first time this group of players has played in the North American Finals since they were formed as a U13 group three years ago. The team possesses a fantastic work ethic and a real togetherness exists between the squad. They are looking forward to their first Super Y-League postseason.

U13 Girls MPS Boston
Also coached by Sarah Dooley and Mark McDevitt, the MPS U13 Renegades have had an excellent first season in the Super Y-League. The side finished in first place with 28 points and an undefeated record of 9-1-0. The team has a great work ethic and showed tremendous improvement as the season progressed.

The team will compete in Group B of the U13 girls North American Finals [+]
