TAMPA – As always, the most wide-open North American Finals tournament at United Soccer Leagues SoccerFest will be the youngest. The U13 tournament’s Group D will feature: MPS Boston, Mountain WFC, Diablo FC and H.C. United. Looking at the past clubs who championed the U13 tournament, the Southeast representatives must be considered a viable championship contender.
H.C. United - U15 boys A Southeast Divisional club has been in the finals of the U13 group in each of the past two seasons. In 2006, H.C. United’s U13 boys, now playing at the U15 level, qualified for the championship match by defeating D.C. United 2-0 in the semifinals. However, the home side was unable to hold back the eventual champion, Cal Odyssey, who won 4-0 in the last match of the season. That H.C. United team has gone on to qualify for this year’s U15 North American Finals with a divisional record of 9-2-2.
Weston SC – U14 boys Last season it was Weston SC who represented the Southeast in the championship match. After handling their competition to the tune of a 2-0-1 record in three group play matches, Weston SC advanced to the semifinals and dispatched a one-loss New Jersey Junior Stallions side via a 2-0 win. In the finals Weston SC’s defense carried the match into penalties following a 0-0 stalemate with Southern California representative, Slammers FC. Weston’s U13’s then dramatically edged the Southern Californians 5-4 in penalties to win the club’s first North American Championship. That team, coached by Alvin James, has not disappointed in 2008. This season the defending ’94 champions have a 11-0-2 record and will represent the Southeast in the U14 boys North American Finals.
H.C. United – U13 boys Enter Hillsborough County United’s U13 boys. This team Scott Moniz, Fabio Suarez and Byron Triplett has compiled a 9-1-1 record in the Southeast this season. Lead by a solid defense, the side allowed just four goals all season for a goals against average of 0.36. In the first month of the season, June, H.C. United posted five straight shutouts before traveling to East Florida to take on the eventual Group B Champion, Schulz Academy. H.C. United won that match 3-1 and outscored their next two opponents 12-0 before losing an August 9th decision to Sunrise SC, 2-0. That was the one and only match H.C. United would lose this season. The team heads into November, 21st group play where they will face MPS Boston, the New England Division champions, who went 8-2-2 this season.
