SAN DIEGO, CA – The Poway Vaqueros opened their second campaign in the USL Super-20 League with five consecutive wins before suffering their first defeat this past Monday, June 29 at the hands of Chivas USA, 3-1.

Chivas USA currently leads Group A of the league’s Southwest Division with a record of 7-1-0. Despite the loss, Poway leads Group B of the Southwest Division. The top finisher in each group earns a qualification position at the 2009 North American Finals. That event will be hosted by the Chicago Fire at Sportscore Complexes in Rockford, Illinois beginning Thursday, July 30 and continuing through Sunday, August 2.

Group A includes Chivas USA and a development team from the LA Galaxy as well as two USL Premier Development League reserve sides from the Lancaster Rattlers and the Bakersfield Brigade. Group B includes Poway, a PDL reserve side from the Southern California Seahorses, SUSA and Riverside MGFM.

“[The Super-20 League] gives the young kids in the Poway Vaqueros Club, and other San Diego area clubs, something to look forward to,” said Poway’s Super-20 Head Coach Craig McGill. “After the Under-18 age group when they are finished, they can now move on to the U20. This gives them a chance to even possibly be picked up by a professional team. We are playing an LA Galaxy and Chivas USA development teams, so it’s a great opportunity for the kids.”

Home games will be played at Poway High School. Admission is $5, or free for current Vaqueros players.
