US U17's Fall, 2-1 to Spain

KANO, NIGERIA – The US Under-17 Men’s National Team fell, 2-1 to Spain in Sani Abacha Stadium in Nigeria today, despite playing up a man for over 88 minutes. The US led initially, 1-0 on the strength of a Jack McInerney goal in the fourth minute. McInerney hails from the Super Y-League club, Alpharetta United.

Spain managed to even the match, 1-1 in the 22nd minute on a goal scored by Borja. Eight minutes later Spain took the lead for good, 2-1 thanks to a goal scored by Pablo Sarabia. The US held a 17-11 advantage in shots on goal and a 59 to 41 percent edge in possession in the loss.

The US is part of Group E at the event and will continue through the first phase against Malawi on Thursday, October 29 at 4PM (11AM ET) and against United Arab Emirates on Sunday, November 1 at 4PM (10AM ET).

Rounding out the list of former USL Super Y-League players representing the US at the U17 World Cup is: Keith Cardona, Juan Agudelo, Spencer Richey, Zachary Herold, Perry Kitchen, Alex Shinsky, Stefan Jerome and Dominick Sarle.

Cardona and Agudelo starred with Red Bull New York’s U15 boys, who went 14-0-1 to win the Mid Atlantic Division during the 2008 SYL season. Also playing in the U15 division during the 2008 season was Shinsky, who patrolled the midfield for Super Nova FC. Jerome played the 2008 season with West Pines United’s U17 boys. That team finished the season with a record of 4-4-3.

Defender Perry Kitchen last played in the Super Y-League during the 2006 season with the Chicago Magic. He helped the Magic win one of their record 10 Super Y-League titles. His U14 team went 10-0-0 during the regular season and 2-0-1 during the group play stage at the 2006 North American Finals. In the semifinals, the Magic downed the Brooklyn Knights, 2-0 before defeating Red Bull New York, 2-1 to claim the title. Zach Herold of West Pines United gained experience playing the SYL’s Mid Atlantic Division in 2007.

Spencer Richey played with the Washington Crossfire in the SYL’s Northwest Division. Domincik Sarle played in the league’s New England Division with Black Watch SC.

Of the Super Y-League contingent, Kitchen, Herold, Jerome and Shinsky started today’s game for the US. Sarle came on in the 88th minute to replace Eriq Zavaleta while Cardona and Agudelo did not play.
