U14 Girls North American Finals 12 team capsules from the U14G North American Finals
GROUP A
Washington Freedom
The Washington Freedom championed the 12-team Mid Atlantic Division with a record of 9-2-0. This team tied Qucikstrike SC for the most goals scored during their 11-game season with 34, an average of 3.09 per match. The Freedom’s defense was their façade, they allowed just five goals all season. Coached by Jamil Fayadi and Ellis Pierre, the team’s top-scorer was Marlo Sweatman, who netted eight goals and added an assist.
Chicago Magic
Coached by Karl Smith, Angel Garcia and Steve Sobey this team completed a 5-2-0 season in the Midwest Division of the Super Y-League. The side was very balanced, averaging 1.85 goals per game while allowing only 0.85. The team’s top scorers were Meghan Mannix, who had three goals and an assist, and Taylor Markanich, who also scored three goals on the year.
West Coast Capitals
Victoria, British Columbia’s West Coast Capitals come from nine soccer clubs up and down Vancouver Island on the western edge of Canada. Each girl, a top athlete in her own club, has a passion for the game and a strong work ethic. They came together in April this year under the direction of Coach Nigel Large to form a focused and hard-working team. Through their “we are always in the game,” attitude, they fought tactically to come out on top, placing second in the Northwest Division, just behind Coastal WFC. The West Coast Capitals look forward to the challenges and adventures their trip across North America, to the USL Super Y-League Finals, will offer.
MPS Renegades
Renegades had a strong season in 2009. Anchored by a strong defense and excellent goalkeeping, the team allowed the fewest goals (0.50GAA) in the New England division and finished in second place with only one loss. Powered by an excellent work ethic, team mentality and camaraderie – the players handled several serious injuries throughout the season. Equipped with a technical offense and hardworking midfield, the girls believe they can compete with any team. They completed the season by defeating the U14 Arsenal Ladies Centre of Excellence squad in the Arsenal Cup in London, England in August. They are sure to be a handful for their competition in the SYL North American Finals.
GROUP B
Seacoast United
Seacoast United U14 girls finished a successful Super Y-League campaign with an unbeaten record of 11-0-1. Competing in the New England Region against some strong competition, they finished first in their division and head down to the SYL finals in good form. Seacoast finished the season with an unbelievable goal difference of plus-60, scoring 68 goals and only conceding just eight over the course of 12 games.
"It has been a very enjoyable summer for this team,” said Head Coach David Burgess. “I have really enjoyed watching them perform and play to a very high standard. The full squad of 23 players has contributed. I enjoyed watching them develop and the progression they have made is encouraging.”
Northern Virginia Majestics
“This is a team of players who have competitive spirit, dedication and team unity,” said Northern Virginia Majestics Coach Marie Schweitzer. “While I am pleased with the 45 goals we scored during the regular season, I am more impressed we only allowed seven goals against in ten games played. This season, our goal was to qualify for the SYL North American Finals. Now that we have reached our goal, we are looking forward to playing competitive teams from the United States and Canada.”
Parsippany SC
Parsippany SC’s U14 girls are making their first trip the SYL North American Finals. The team finished the regular season with a 8-2-1 record and will be joined in Tampa by the U13G, U17G and U16B teams. The team is coached by Stephanie Zalewski, who took over a week before the first match. After a set-back in the first game, she guided the team to 7-0-1 record in the next eight matches. The girls are thrilled and honored to be representing Parsippany SC at such a prestigious event. Parsippany is also looking forward to continuing the club's tradition of success at this event.
West Michigan Fire Juniors
The West Michigan Fire Juniors have achieved their season goal and made it to SYL North American Finals for the second year in a row. Building on last year's experience, the team has worked hard this summer to improve. They are excited to showcase their talents. The team is made up of a diverse group of ladies who come from a total of eight different club teams from across West Michigan. The team is coached by Courtney Nash and Brock West.
GROUP C
Kalamazoo Kingdom
The Kalamazoo Kingdom Girls U14 team earned an invitation to the 2009 USL Super Y-League Finals in Tampa, FL by virtue of their Midwest Division Championship. They finished with a record of 6-0-2. The team which is coached by Roberto Gonzalez, who competes with soccer players from areas across southwest Michigan including: Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Plainwell and Stevensville. The Kingdom girls are making their first trip to Tampa to participate in the USL SoccerFest. The team looks forward to competing for the SYL North American Championship.
Coastal WFC
Coached by Ajit Braich (CSA A License and Head Coach for the North Delta Youth Soccer Club) and assisted by Jag Sajan, the U14 girls went 7-1-2 in 10 games this season, recording 16 goals for and just five against. The U14 girls earned first place honors in their division with 23 points.
Schulz Academy
Schulz Academy won the USL Super Y-League’s Southeast Division with a record of 7-1-0. The team outscored their opponents, 28-6. Schulz’s only loss was to long-time east Florida rival, Kendall SC, in a very entertaining, 4-3 match that was played on Sunday, August 9. Coached by Gary Cole and Scott Stengel, this team was a finalist at the U13 SYL North American Finals. Jackie Stengel was the team’s leading scorer this season. She scored eight goals and added an assist.
TSF Academy
TSF Academy took third place in the Mid Atlantic Division with a final record of 7-2-2. Against fellow qualifiers, the Washington Freedom, TSF won an important, 2-1 decision on Saturday, July 11. Coached by Mark White, John Saunders and Lee Bakewell the team edged Quickstrike SC, by a single point in the standings to qualify for the North American Finals. Carly Berdan was the team’s top goal scorer this season. She had seven goals and an assist. Berdan was followed by Emma Coccia, who ended the year with six goals and an assist.
