U17 Boys All-Tournament Team

USL News Release
Wednesday, December 16, 2009
TAMPA, FLORIDA – United Soccer Leagues released today the 10th and final North American Finals All-Tournament Team for the 2009 season, highlighting the U17 Boys Division of the Super Y-League. Schulz Academy captured the division crown, beating Alpharetta United, 3-1 in the tournament final. The trophy was Schulz Academy’s second of the 2009 season and their fifth all-time.
Three of Schulz’s championships were won in consecutive seasons (2004, 2005, 2006) by Schulz’s 1990 boys – a team that initially boasted forward Josmer Altidore. Altidore is currently playing with Hull City of the English Premier League. The next candidate to follow Altidore’s example is Donovan Henry, who led Schulz’s U17 team in All-Tournament nominations from opposing coaches with four. Midfielder Osvaldo Miranda and forward Cristian Henao-Nunez also received multiple votes for Schulz Academy in their first U17 boy’s championship.
Forward Chibuzo Nwosu of Alpharetta United did top Schulz Academy in one aspect – he was the only player in the U17 boy’s tournament to receive the maximum amount of votes. Nwosu picked up a nomination from every opposing coach he faced during the North American Finals to finish with five. His teammate, Carl Cochran tied with Black Watch SC’s Devin Bailey for the most votes for a goalkeeper. Ottawa Fury goalkeeper Chad Bush had two, the most votes for his team.
Last season’s U16 boys finalist, TSF Academy was pushed to the brink of elimination by Real Maryland FC in their group play match on Sunday, November 22. The match ended in a 0-0 draw that gave each team seven points in three days. TSF advanced based on their goal-scoring ability. They finished group play plus-seven where Real Maryland, who deserved a better fate, ended group play at plus-three.

The lag that followed that Sunday night matchup with Real may have cost TSF Academy a repeat shot at a Super Y-League title. They fell the following afternoon to Schulz Academy, 3-2. For their efforts, TSF Academy had defender Christopher Benedict and midfielder Alex Sommer named to the All-Tournament Team. Real Maryland’s Manuel Carranza, a defender also picked up a nomination. Neither team allowed a single goal through their first three matches.
The second semifinal contained Alpharetta United, the South Jersey Barons and a single goal scored by Alpharetta’s Jamie Gleeson. The match could just have easily finished 5-4 save for the crossbar and goalposts, but Cochran and his South Jersey counterpart, Makenzie Scott did well to keep the match a low-scoring affair. South Jersey’s best player that day was defender Terrell White. Earning the most votes for South Jersey throughout the tournament was forward Alec Golini.
Super Nova FC, who was the only team to tie Schulz Academy, 1-1 on Saturday, November 21, had forward Austin Martz selected as an All-Tournament Team member.
