Super Y-League North American Finals Approaching
Culmination of season becomes most competitive youth event of the year
In 1999 six teams competed in Finals in Atlanta, Georgia claiming the first champions of the fledging national youth league known as the Super Y-League. Since then the event has become recognized as the most competitive youth soccer event of the year for teams around the United States and Canada.
On August 20-24, the top teams in the Super Y-League will culminate the season, fighting to become the 5th Super Y-League Champions in Rockford, IL. In total 88 teams from the U14 Boys and Girls age divisions will compete for the North American title.
“I wouldn’t say it is a miracle that the league has come so far in the past 4 years, but is remarkable in what the clubs have accomplished with this league for the evolution of the game,” said Matt Weibe, Director of the Super Y-League. “This is something that the soccer community should be proud of. A strong North American youth league is the backbone for competitive player development and we have all done our part to make it.”
After 1999, the Super Y-League Finals have been in Raleigh, North Carolina and Downingtown, Pennsylvania. With the expansion of the league in other areas of the country, the league has moved the finals to the Midwest to the Sport Core II facility in Rockford, Illinios.
The ODP sanctioning of the Super Y-League Finals will provide the U.S. National Coaching Staff a great opportunity to identify players for U.S. National Team Programs. The event will put the top teams in the SYL together in a dog-eat-dog environment culminating with Sunday’s final match to claim the 5th Super Y-League Champions.
“The Super Y-League isn’t a secret anymore to the soccer community. The word is out, and more people understand what we are doing to provide clubs, players and coaches a definitive league for the elite level player and a system for players to reach higher levels of the game. At some time, people in the soccer community thought that this would surpass other major youth soccer championships, and it is evident that it is on its way to become the most important championship a team can win.”
The event has all of the variables needed this year to become more spectacular then past seasons. Not only are the fields and facility in spectacular condition, the host organization, Chicago Magic, has been a large factor in planning and providing resources to the event. Fox Sports World has recognized the curiosity of the American player around the world and will be airing the Super Y-League Finals on their network for soccer fans to see world-wide. Most of all, the teams from the SYL coming to Rockford is impressive to the youth soccer aficionado who wants the best in soccer.
“We have learned in the past what works well, and what doesn’t work. One of the most important variables that we have is that this event is being planned and operated by people that have played the game and understand what the teams and players need. This has to do with everything from competition to administrative planning. Our goal is to provide the most competitive and well operated event that we can,” added Weibe.
