HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – The Triangle Futbol Club Men’s Super-20 League team took three of four games during the weekend to pull even with Knoxville Soccer Academy at the top of the South Atlantic Division standings.
TFC dropped the opener at FASA on Friday 2-0, but bounced back to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday against Northern Virginia Royals, 1-0 and 2-1.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Monjue Campbell served the ball into the box, forcing an own goal for the only score of the game. Bobby Castro took control offensively in the second game, scorching the seam for two consecutive goals. The Royals picked up a goal late in the second half on a penalty kick. TFC goalkeeper Brad Newman blocked the initial attempt, but the Royals were able to pick up the rebound and put it in the goal. For his performance, Castro was named to this week’s Super-20 Top Performers list.
TFC closed out the road trip with a 4-3 win against Maryland Rush. Campbell proved to be invaluable on the offensive, as he fed Dave Arensdorf and Omar Shazly for the first two goals of the game. The Rush picked up a goal, but Juan Dimate returned the favor to make it 3-1 TFC. An own goal pushed the score to 3-2, but Campbell took control again and scored to make it 4-2. Maryland scored again for the final margin.
“We have set ourselves up for a great finish to the season and we are now in prime position to win the league,” Triangle Coach Rudy Lawrence said. “Winning both Tennessee games this week will put us in first place and give us the control to qualify for Nationals.”
TFC heads to Knoxville on Thursday and Friday for two games against Knoxville Soccer Academy, which is tied with TFC for first in the standings.
