BRADENTON, FL – The Super Y-League ODP Select Teams finished their weekend series against the US U15 National Team pool with a 1-2-1 record in four closely fought matches at the team’s residency home IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The SYL ODP 89’s capped the weekend with a 3-2 victory Sunday.
The Super Y-League Olympic Development Program consists of the Super Y-League National ODP Camps and the Super Y-League North American Finals, which are both sanctioned by US Soccer and the United States Olympic Committee. The Super Y-League ODP system is a specifically designed program to identify players for US National Team Programs.
Evaluated over the course of the Super Y-League season by the SYL National ODP Scouting System, the nation’s top players were identified and invited to attend the SYL ODP National Camps, which were held over the last five weeks at the Cocoa Expo Center. At the close of each camp, the top players were named to Select Teams by the SYL Scouting System coaches and SYL ODP National Camp Technical Director Perry Van Der Beck in consultation with US National Team coaching staff on hand.
The players named to the U14 and U15 boy’s Select Teams were invited to return to Florida to play the U15 National Team player pool at the IMG Academy in Bradenton.
“The success of this event demonstrates that the Super Y-League ODP system will significantly contribute to the player identification process of the US National Team Programs,” added Super Y-League Director, Matt Weibe.
“I would like to thank the many clubs, coaches and players that made this possible to help our National Team Programs. I would also like to thank our sponsors at UMBRO for providing the equipment for this event.”

TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Take
“Our goal at the first was for our third game to be our best game,” SYL ODP coach John Hannan of the Chicago Magic said. “Were we better than yesterday? Absolutely.”
Although his day was cut short due to cramps, Super Y-League forward Ellis McLoughlin continued to impress. Hannan said the player from Washington state has special qualities.
“He has pace and can play with his back to goal, which makes him a very useful player athletically and soccer-wise,” Hannan said.
Some of the techniques employed by McLoughlin reveal he has spent a good bit of time watching top-level forwards, and the player himself admits to being a Wayne Rooney devotee. He credits the Super Y-League coaches with helping make the team competitive in Saturday’s match.
“We weren’t doing very well when we first started practicing but the coaches did a good job of telling us what to do and we feel like we were able to achieve some goals today,” he said.
Along with McLoughlin, the Super Y-League got good play from Shawn Barry and John Rogers in the backline, and midfielder Greg Jordan who, like Rogers, has a great soccer brain.
For the U.S., defenders Thomas Meyer and Brandon Zimmerman were quite good, with midfielder Sam Redmond always dangerous in attack.
