Could you describe a typical competitive playing season for the Super Y-League?
This depends on the division of the Super Y-League. Ultimately we see this as a six-month league. We are now in a six-month season which would run from mid-spring to late fall. Over time this would give us enough time to get in 30-40 games, plus allow kids and teams one weekend in every month to play in tournaments, the Super Y-League ODP identification weekend, US Club Soccer National Cup and experience some foreign travel and other competitions. We want to build in enough flexibility so that teams and divisions can work with their respective associations. The natural gaps that will be built into the schedule will allow local teams and divisions to coordinate scheduling.
Some divisions will begin in January, while some begin towards the end of April and early May. Each division is somewhat unique due to climate, different soccer activities, scholastic sports, beginning and end of the school year, etc. Each division collectively designs their own division. This includes number of teams, games, start dates and age groups. We leave it to the soccer people within these divisions to give us the best input on what they need to have for a successful season.
With the partnership that we have with US Club Soccer, we will be able to utilize their national cup (US Club Soccer National Cup) as an event where teams from other Super Y-League divisions will be able to compete for a cup championship with US Club Soccer and we will also count these games as cross-divisional games in the Super Y-League season. This will create some balance in the soccer calendar with the clubs and provide them a better structure for their teams.
There are difficulties with the soccer calendar that US Youth Soccer has not been able to grasp. With their fragmentation between state associations, each having different state cup, ODP and league dates, clubs and players are put into tough positions while competing at the regional level. With the Super Y-League and US Youth Soccer working together we are able to create a calendar that everyone can use which will provide quality play for players rather than overplay and confusion.
