Super-20 North American Finals
All-League Teams announced

Tuesday, August 7

TAMPA – United Soccer Leagues Super-20 League announced today the All-League teams following their Super-20 North American Finals held Thursday, August 2 – Sunday, August 5 in Epping, New Hampshire. Player Development Academy (PDA) out of Zarephath, New Jersey took home the hardware on the men’s side while Parsippany SC, also from New Jersey, won the women’s trophy. PDA’s Mike Konicoff and Ingrid Wells were awarded the league’s Most Valuable Player awards following the final.

Parsippany defeated Quickstrike SC 1-0 in the women’s final. The game’s only goal was scored by Merrilyn Esteve. She was assisted by defender Jen Orlando, who was a large part of a championship defense that allowed only two goals in four matches. For her efforts she was named to the Super-20 All-League Team.

Accompanying Orlando on the women’s team were defenders Meredith Brown and Caitlin Marple of the Hampton Roads Piranhas, and Brittany Taylor of tournament runner-up Quickstrike FC. The Piranhas also allowed only two goals through group play. Their goalkeeper, Lauren Tupman, was the third Hampton Roads player nominated. She earned a clean sheet in two out of the three matches played in the Super-20 Finals.

PDA defeated the Chicago Fire Premier 3-1 in a high-paced conclusion to the men’s season. To advance to the final game, PDA battled through 80 minutes of regular time and two ten minute overtime periods before downing the Toronto Lynx, 4-2 in a penalty-kick shootout. During the match two stars emerged in goal: PDA’s Bryan Meredith and Toronto’s Nils Binstock. The two traded highlight reel matches before the precision of Meredith in the shootout earned the Monmouth College freshman two saves and a place in the finals. Both goalkeepers were named to the Super-20 All-League team.

Joining the keepers is Chicago Fire Premier defender Chris Schuler. He netted a goal in the final and solidified a defense that sent MLS Academy sides D.C. United and Red Bull New York packing in the same day. The Fire Premier downed D.C. United 2-1 and Red Bull New York 1-0, respectfully.

Also nominated from the Fire Premier was their top offensive player in the league finals, forward Braden Fleak. Fleak assisted Schuler’s goal in the final. He also added a hat-trick in a 3-2 win over Diablo Valley Soccer Club of Northern California on the opening day of the league finals. His offensive output in four matches was four goals and two assists.

Not outdone were the champions, PDA, who forwarded three field players to the All-League team: midfielder Bryan Martinez, defender Len Coleman and Konicoff.

The selections are based off the nominations of opposing coaches made throughout tournament play. The positions on the team were altered slightly to include the players receiving the most nominations.
