TAMPA – United Soccer Leagues announced today the addition of Mecklenburg Union to the now four-year old Super-20 League. Based in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, the club joins the Men’s and Women’s South Atlantic Division for the upcoming 2009 season – home of the defending Women’s Super-20 League Champion, Triangle FC.
“We felt the [Super 20-League] would provide a competitive environment for players in the local area,” said Mecklenburg Union Director of Coaching, Chip Wiggins. “It also has the potential to bring some exposure to players in and around the Charlotte area.”
“Based on the players that have been in touch with us and some already in the club, college players and players from other local clubs, we feel the team will be competitive in the first season,” added Wiggins.
The Mecklenburg Union Men’s team will compete against six other clubs in their region including: the Carolina Dynamo, East Tennessee Soccer Federation, FC Fredericksburg, the Hampton Roads Piranhas, Northern Virginia Royals and Triangle FC. The Dynamo won the South Atlantic Division in 2008, finishing with a regular season record of 9-1-0 before falling, 3-0 to Real Maryland FC on the second day of group play during the Super-20 League North American Finals in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Super-20 League Men’s Championship was won by the Chicago Fire.
“The Charlotte area is a great place for soccer right now,” said Wiggins. “Charlotte area players returning home from college are hungry for a competitive environment and local college coaches would have somewhere to keep player development going during the off season. [The Super-20 League] allows local club players the opportunity to train at a high level during the summer. This can only help to enhance Meck Union’s development.”
The Mecklenburg women will compete against four other South Atlantic sides including: the Hampton Roads Piranhas, Northern Virginia Majestics, NOVA FC – Leesburg and Triangle FC.
