Super-20 Finals Return to Seacoast Women’s finals doubles in size, qualification format released Thursday, June 7
EPPING, NH – The flawless facilities of Seacoast United played a terrific role in the success of the inaugural USL Super-20 League North American Finals. Consequently, the Super-20 League will send their ultimate event to the forest of Epping, NH for a second time. The event kicks off Thursday, August 2 and runs through Sunday, August 5. Regional qualification details for the top U20 league in North America were also announced today.
“The level of competition coming out of our Midwest and Mid Atlantic regions early this season has been impressive,” said USL Senior Director of Youth Development, Jeff McRaney. “When you add in the continental aspect provided by the Southeast, South Atlantic and Northern California regions of the Super-20 League, you get a premier event.”
The fight to advance out of the Mid Atlantic consists of 20-teams: defending Super-20 finalist Red Bull New York, defending semi-finalist D.C. United, and the youth academy side of USL Second Division club, the Harrisburg City Islanders. Six of those 20 will qualify for the North American Finals.
The expanded Midwest operates on a 12 team format including the youth sides of several USL Premier Development League clubs: the St. Louis Lions, Chicago Fire Premier, Indiana Invaders, Kalamazoo Kingdom, Toronto Lynx and Des Moines Menace. The second largest region in the Super-20 League, three teams from the Midwest will enter the 16-team North American Finals.
The Southeast division, home to defending Super-20 champion Kendall SC, will forward two representatives to Epping, NH. Two is also the qualification number for the Northern California Division which held the distinction of being the tightest qualification race leading up to the finals last season. The newly formed South Atlantic Division will send one team from their five club race. One representative out of the New England Division will join the host, Seacoast United in the finals.
On the women’s side of the Super-20 League finals, the addition of the South Atlantic enables the North American Finals to create an eight team format. Two representatives will emerge out of that division. Four clubs will join them from the Mid Atlantic, home to the defending Super-20 Champion Washington Freedom. The New England division champion will join Seacoast United in the finals. Should Seacoast win the New England Division, the runner-up will join the women’s North American Finals.
